About Tunisia and our Goals

Brief History

Tunisia is a wonderful country in North Africa.  Tunisia is a country situated on the Mediterranean coast of North Africa.  It is the northernmost African country and the smallest of the nations situated along the Atlas mountain range, bordering Algeria, to the west, and Libya to the south east. Around forty percent of the country is composed of the Sahara desert.   Tunisia lies immediately to the south of Italy and Malta.   Please follow links for further information.

Tunisia is a stable country and is often called the African Rivera.  It attracts visitors from all over the world; many visitors from Europe tend to stay for extended vacations.  The people are known for their friendliness, tolerant and welcoming gestures and many nationals, who live hear tourist location  are dependant on tourism for employment.

Although the government of Tunisia has made vast improvements there are still parts of Tunisia that are underdeveloped socially, economically and educationally. Although education is more available  and the rights of children and women are improved, there are still many people in Tunisia that do not have ready/easy access to mainstream provision especially that of health, general  fitness, or education.

Tunisians have a life expectancy of 73 years at birth.  This number is quite high compared to many other African nations and it a testimony to how hard the government has worked to improve the life of its people.

However compared to the West life in Tunisia is still very hard for many.  There are still many people in Tunisia that do not have ready access to mainstream provision especially that of health, general  fitness and education.  Depending on where people live most (of these are women and children) belong to very poor/poverty stricken socio economic groups that do not have access to the simplest of provision that may improve their quality of life.  If people need medical intervention it can be a long journey to government sponsored hospitals that are often over crowded or under resourced.

Parents of children who are born with physical or mental challenges are often not able to afford additional help so that the children may thrive or achieve even the basic in quality of life.  In many instances these children and their families can be shunned by local populations thereby pushed further into isolation.

Our Goal

Our goal is simple; it is to introduce the therapeutic and physical benefits of yoga to Tunisia through the use of education. Hammamet has been chosen to host the first annual teacher training conference to look at areas of need within Tunisia that could be addressed with the use of yoga.
